Finding Gratitude When All You Can Say Is F*CK!

I previously wrote a post about my gratitude practice I do every morning. (Which you can read here) I sometimes use it in the middle of the night too, when I wake up and can’t fall back asleep. Kind of like counting sheep, I name as many things I can think of that I’m grateful for, until I drift off again. Or until the second melatonin kicks in… I guess it’s up for debate which of the two actually puts me back to sleep.

But what about the mornings when we wake up and the first word that comes to our conscious minds is “F*UCK!”

What about the mornings when we aren’t thankful we woke up and are still breathing?

How do we wrangle our thoughts from complete despair and brokenness, into something that looks even remotely close to gratitude?!?

My answer is still by thinking about things you’re grateful for. (Thanks Haley, right?) But think broader.

Say thank you for the bed you are laying in. The sheets. Maybe you washed them last night and they still smell like fresh laundry. Say thank you for having shelter. For having food to eat. For our roadways allowing us to get where we need to get. For Netflix. For YouTube. For pornhub. (Jk) (maybe) For having clothes to wear. For how pretty the green grass is. For seeing a flower on the way to work yesterday. For that meme that made you laugh.

Sometimes there isn’t much to be grateful for in the current situation we are struggling with. But if you broaden your search just a little bit, you’ll start seeing all the things you can find a touch of gratitude in.

Once you get in the flow, DON’T STOP!

Just keep naming all the random things you’re grateful for. The box of cereal. Remembering you put gas in your car last night instead of pretending like you were going to leave 10 minutes early in the morning to do it. That cutie you walked by that smelled good. Air conditioners and furnaces. Electricity. Your flatiron. Just keep going!

It might not make that big of a difference the first couple days you practice this, but keep at it and you will start to notice a change in how you feel.

Get your kids involved too! It’s fun to hear what they are grateful for!

Tell us in the comments some of the random, plain ol’ run of the mill things you are grateful for!

You are loved, so very much!

Love, Haley
